Case Study 1
As a Small Business, if the task of doing the daily backup is given to an office staffer that is paid, say, $20.00 per hour; and if it takes, say, 15 minutes to run the backup routine, then the cost to you is $100.00 per month in wages plus the original equipment cost plus the consumable media. If your backup set is, say, a 1Gb Outlook.pst file, a 500Mb MYOB file and 2.5Gb of price lists and brochures and sales documentation - then your cost with 4th Wall Data Security would be $8.00 per month.
Additional Considerations:-
a) is the staffer present every day of the month
b) if not, is there a trained replacement?
c) is the media that is taken offsite, secure? ...from damage, magnetic fields, loss, is it returned every day?
d) how many copies of the data are kept - is it every version.. ever?
e) how easy is it to test recover the data, to prove the system?
f) is every computer in your business included in the backup routine?
International research has shown that 60% of business data resides on the edge of the business network, on desktops and in MyDocuments folders. Is ALL of your business' data included in your backup routine? If you lost your top salesman, would you also lose all the data that made him that?
Additionally, aside from catastrophic machine failure, the biggest single cause of lost data is still human error. And, every business insurance policy today has a rider that says that a 'proper' backup regime must be in place for a business to qualify their claim.
Case Study 2
As a SOHO or householder, your data is equally important.
If you have searched high and low for that special piece of music..
If you have irreplacable personal documents...
If you have once-in-a-lifetime photos..
- then it's not if hard drives fail, that you should be considering, it's when.
We all get car insurance without thinking - and yet if we crash our car - it can be fixed or replaced. What would happen if you lost all your emails? All your financial records? What would happen if you lost your MYOB or Quicken or QuickBooks database? Over 60% of business who experience such loss are out of business within 6 months. Why? Because most people don't backup properly - either because it takes too much time and effort, or the systems required cost too much. For those businesses that do backup - the backup is usually inadequate - rarely done daily, and rarely taken offsite.
